Fall Protection in Construction

Course Synopsis: Attendants shall learn the OSHA 3146 standards covering fall protection in construction systems, equipment and the application limits. They will get a hand on practice with the fall protection equipment and be made aware of all the aspects on the equipment and materials that they are working with. The attendants will also learn how to write a Fall Protection Plan by accurately defining the hazards and the measures and methods that could be utilized to eliminate or reduce the risk of such hazards.
Who Should Attend: Engineers, contractors, foremen, ministries and municipalities officials and all who are interested in learning about Fall Protection in Construction. Prerequisites: Be able to understand and communicate in English. Working experience in construction sites is an added benefit.

Supporting Equipments: To effectively interact with the attendants, an LC projector, a sound system and a flip chart with markers need to be provided to the trainer.

Fall Protection in Construction Outline

  • Introduction
  • Defining and demonstrating the Personal Protective Equipment. Proper use and inspection of head, eye, hand and foot protections.
  • Defining and demonstrating the elements of Positioning/Restraint systems. Proper use of body belt, positioning rope and chain rebar lanyards. The maximum allowable free fall distance and impact load.

Why this system can not be used as a fall arrest system.

  • Defining and demonstrating the elements of Fall Arrest systems. Proper use of anchorage, connecters, body harness, lanyards, deceleration device and horizontal and vertical lifelines. Defining deceleration and free fall distances and calculating fall clearance. The maximum allowable free fall distance and impact load. A comparison between positioning/restraining and arrest systems.
  • Defining and introducing the Guard Rail systems. Proper construction, elements size, and height, of wood guard rail. The minimum static load each element in the guard rail must resist.
  • Defining and introducing the Cover system. Proper construction of covers. The minimum load the cover must support without failure. Power point presentation with team participation.
  • Defining and introducing the Safety Net systems. Proper installation and of safety nets. Method of testing to insure its capability to absorb an impact force.
  • Defining and introducing the Warning Line system. Proper installation and height. The minimum static load each stanchion must resist.
  • Defining and introducing the Safety Monitoring system. Specifications of person implementing the monitoring. Power point presentation with team participation.
  • Inspection and maintenance of Fall Protection Systems.
  • Writing a Fall Protection Plan using a hypothetical worksite where hazards will be defined and safety measures will be selected to specifically meet those hazards. Team participation
